📊 MIXED Clean Harbors Q1 EBITDA $248M, raises FY guidance to $1.27B midpoint
Revenue & Profitability
Q1 2026 total revenue was $1.46 billion, up 2% year-over-year. Adjusted EBITDA was $248 million, up 6%, with margin expanding 60 basis points to 17%. Net income increased 8%, delivering EPS of $1.19. Income from operations was $119 million, up 7%. The company raised its full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to a range of $1.24-$1.30 billion, midpoint $1.27 billion (9% growth vs 2025). SKSS segment EBITDA guidance was raised to $165 million, up 20% from 2025.
Outlook
Management sees an improving U.S. economic backdrop supporting base business growth, driven by reshoring, robust project work, and expanded PFAS-related opportunities. The Department of Defense and EPA have issued PFAS guidance endorsing incineration and other disposal methods. Industrial services remain challenged due to refiners maximizing fuel output and shorter turnaround durations, but initiatives are underway to position for growth. Base oil prices surged late in Q1 due to geopolitical conflict, providing a tailwind for SKSS, though uncertainty persists around duration.
Growth Drivers
Key growth levers include PFAS remediation (pipeline accelerating to 25-35% growth), field services branch expansion (10 new branches planned in 2026), cross-selling across 60 lines of business, and the Kimball incinerator adding $10-15 million EBITDA in 2026. Technical services and Safety-Kleen Environmental Services both grew revenue 5-7% in Q1. ES segment exited Q1 with March revenues up 10% year-over-year. M&A pipeline is active, primarily smaller tuck-ins in Environmental Services.
Balance Sheet & CapEx
Q1 CapEx was $97 million (down ~$20 million year-over-year), including ~$15 million for strategic growth projects (SDA unit and vacuum truck fleet). Full-year net CapEx guidance (excluding strategic projects) is $350-$410 million (midpoint $380 million), up $10 million from prior guidance due to additional property investments and site capability upgrades. Strategic projects include the SDA unit ($85 million) and fleet investment ($25 million). Adjusted free cash flow guidance is $490-$550 million (midpoint $520 million).
Margins
Consolidated adjusted EBITDA margin improved 60 basis points to 17% in Q1, driven by pricing, volume leverage, cost controls, and internalization efficiencies. ES segment margin increased 50 basis points, marking the 16th consecutive quarter of year-over-year improvement. SKSS margin expanded 320 basis points. SG&A as a percentage of revenue was 14.2% in Q1 but expected to be in the high 12% range for the full year. Operating leverage from fixed cost infrastructure and workforce productivity initiatives are key margin drivers.
Key Risks
Key risks include uncertainty around the duration of the overseas conflict (Iran) impacting base oil prices and therefore SKSS profitability. Industrial services face a challenged market with refiners running full-out and shorter turnaround durations, which may delay recovery. Weather impacts in February affected ES operations. There is a wide range of potential outcomes for base oil prices, and management's $165 million SKSS EBITDA assumption may change. Regulatory developments around PFAS are still evolving.
