📊 MIXED Record Q1: 20.3% ROE, 91.7% combined ratio, $5.25 EPS
Revenue & Profitability
Operating ROE was 20.3% and operating EPS was $5.25 in Q1 2026. The all-in combined ratio improved nearly 2.5 points to 91.7%, while the ex-CAT combined ratio improved 2.4 points to 85.4%. Net investment income increased 19.6%. Book value per share was $101.86. The company repurchased $87 million of shares in Q1 and $14 million through April 28.
Outlook
Management expects the property market to continue softening, with heightened competition, especially in larger accounts. Liability severity from social inflation remains elevated but has matured. The company plans to maintain pricing discipline while targeting selective growth. Q1 growth is seen as the low point for the year.
Growth Drivers
Growth in Small Commercial (6.4%) was driven by double-digit new business, improved retention, and digital engagement. Middle Market growth was positive (1.5%) and expected to build. Specialty growth is expected to ramp from Q1's 2.3% as Management Liability, Surety, E&S, and Marine (targeting upper single-digit growth) gain momentum. Personal Lines is focusing on under-penetrated states and upmarket with the Prestige product.
Balance Sheet & CapEx
Technology investment is centered on AI and operating model transformation. Capabilities include an enterprise ingestion and triage agent (debuting in E&S) and AI agents that synthesize complex contracts and medical records for claims. These are built on reusable modular architecture. No specific CapEx dollar amounts were provided.
Margins
The ex-CAT combined ratio improved 2.4 points to 85.4%, with loss ratio improvements in all segments. Personal Lines ex-CAT current accident year combined ratio was 83.8%, Core Commercial 91.5%, and Specialty 85.4%. The expense ratio was 30.7% in Q1, with full-year guidance of 30.3% as growth leverage benefits the latter part of the year.
Key Risks
Key risks include catastrophe activity (6.3 points of combined ratio in Q1, two severe events), social inflation and liability severity, geopolitical conditions and tariffs, and softening property pricing. Prior-year favorable CAT development may not repeat. The company is monitoring terms and conditions changes to manage property exposure.

Financial Model
Projections are built from each company's audited annual financials (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) over the last 5 fiscal years. Forward assumptions — revenue growth %, EBITDA margin, D&A (USD millions), interest expense, tax rate, and capex — are AI-generated using historical context and refreshed twice a year: after the December results season and after the September/Q4 results season.

DCF Valuation
Fair Value = Σ(FCFt / (1+WACC)t) + Terminal Value. Terminal Value uses the Gordon Growth Model: FCF5 × (1+g) / (WACC−g). Default WACC: 10% (US risk-free ~4.5%, equity risk premium ~5.5%). Default terminal growth: 3% (long-run US nominal GDP proxy).

CAGR Tracker
Expected 5-year CAGR = (DCF Fair Value / Current Price)1/5 − 1. Assumes fair value is reached in exactly 5 years — a mechanical estimate only.
